What Does the Data Say About Women in Tech in Africa Today?
The data shows that women are participating in Africa's technology sector, but significant gaps remain between access to skills and representation in the workforce, particularly at senior levels.
Recent research gives us a more nuanced picture than the familiar idea that women are simply “missing” from technology. According to McKinsey's 2025 analysis, women represent around 30% of Africa's STEM workforce, slightly above the global average of 28%.
That representation drops considerably at leadership level: McKinsey found that fewer than 20% of publicly listed African companies with C-suite technology roles had a woman in one of those positions. Among companies generating more than $1 billion in revenue, that figure fell to just 3%.
Skills present yet another challenge.
According to UNESCO, for every 100 men in sub-Saharan Africa who have spreadsheet skills, only 40 to 44 women have the same proficiency. UNESCO also reports that women make up only 26% of the global workforce in data and artificial intelligence.
Those numbers reveal an important distinction: it is important for us now to interrogate where women are entering technology, which skills they're building, how far they progress, and whether they're part of the technologies shaping future work.
What Has Meaningfully Changed for African Women in Tech?
One of the biggest changes is that there are now more pathways into technology, making it possible for women to build digital careers without following one traditional route.
A technology career once seemed to follow a relatively narrow path: study computer science or engineering, graduate and find a technical role. That route still matters, but it's no longer the only way in. Skills-based education, online learning, and remote work mean women in Africa are gaining tech skills through alternative routes, in specialities like data analytics, cloud computing, digital marketing, virtual assistance, and AI-enabled work.
ALX graduate Grace Ritah's experience is one example of finding an alternative route to success as a woman in tech in Africa.
She graduated from university in December 2019, just before the pandemic disrupted the job market. After finding part-time virtual assistant work during the lockdown, she joined ALX's Virtual Assistant programme and later completed AI Career Essentials.
Using the skills she learnt at ALX, she has since worked with more than 15 companies and executives, built a remote-work community of more than 400 professionals, and takes on AI content projects alongside her digital marketing work.

Her journey reflects something important about the changing technology landscape: participating in the digital economy no longer has one definition.
The same expansion is happening across the continent. Women can increasingly enter technology through career transitions, specialised training, entrepreneurship, and technology-enabled professions rather than a single academic pathway.
Where are Women Still Being Left Behind?
The biggest gaps increasingly appear after access: in advanced skills, career progression, leadership, funding, and meaningful participation in the digital economy.
Research from McKinsey across nine African markets found that women working in tech often report positive feelings about their careers, but barriers remain around advancement. These include gender stereotypes, limited access to mentorship and professional networks, and unequal representation in senior roles.
For entrepreneurs, the barriers can look different. According to a report by Veriv Africa, limited mentorship, funding constraints, and bias are among the most prevalent challenges affecting African women building technology businesses.
Before employment or entrepreneurship comes a more fundamental challenge: digital access and capability.
The digital divide is not simply about owning a device or being connected to the internet. Research presented at the 2026 WSIS Forum highlights how affordability, social norms, safety, and control over devices can shape women's ability to participate meaningfully online across African markets.
With this in mind, it becomes clear that measuring progress only by how many women complete technology training gives us an incomplete picture. The stronger measure is what happens afterwards: whether they find opportunities, stay in them, and progress into leadership.
What is Helping African Women Enter, Stay, and Advance in Technology?
Practical skills matter, but structured learning, mentorship, community and visible career pathways can make the difference between learning technology and building a lasting career from it.
Technical capability is one part of the equation, but not the full story. Women also need opportunities to practise those skills in order to build the confidence to move into unfamiliar roles, build professional networks, and access the people who can help them understand what comes next.
Simret Yibeltal's career transition shows what that progression can look like.
Simret was working as a Business Analyst but wanted to move into engineering. She completed ALX's Backend Software Engineering programme and an ALX-sponsored Cloud Developer Nanodegree while building her skills in software and cloud technologies. In 2022, she moved into a DevOps Engineer role working with Google Cloud. Today, she works as a DevSecOps Engineer, building secure and scalable cloud solutions.

Her experience matters because increasing women's participation in technology cannot stop at entry-level access. Women also need pathways that allow them to reskill, specialise, and move into increasingly technical roles and leadership positions.
This is particularly important for women changing careers.
Starting from another profession does not necessarily mean starting from zero. Existing experience combined with new technical capability can create entirely new career trajectories.
What Needs to Happen Next for Women in African Tech?
The next phase needs to move beyond encouraging women to enter technology and focus equally on access, retention, progression and leadership.
Education providers have a role to play by making practical digital and AI skills accessible through multiple pathways.
Employers need to look beyond recruitment numbers and ask whether women have equal opportunities to progress, specialise and lead.
Technology communities can strengthen mentorship and professional networks so that women are not navigating career transitions alone.
Investors and startup ecosystems need to examine the funding and networks available to women building technology businesses.
And initiatives already emerging across Africa show that the conversation is moving in this direction. In May 2026, for example, the UN Economic Commission for Africa launched a programme across Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Namibia and the Republic of Congo focused on women's digital entrepreneurship, combining skills and market access with work on more inclusive policy environments. It is about creating an ecosystem in which women can acquire relevant skills, turn those skills into opportunities, progress into specialised and leadership roles and participate fully in emerging areas such as AI.
