How ALX Africa Learners Are Telling Their Stories and Why It’s Working
- 31 Jul 2026
TL;DR:
Knowing how to tell your professional story is one thing. Watching real people do it is another. This article goes inside two stories from ALX Africa's #IAmTheStory campaign and shows exactly what the three-block framework looks like when it's applied as a way of making a professional story make sense to a stranger.
ALX Africa's #IAmTheStory campaign gives learners and alumni a structured platform to tell their career stories publicly, using the three-block framework, in their own words. The results are showing what happens when people are given both a reason and a structure to share their journey.
During a recent X Space session, a participant named Star shared that she had been wanting to tell her story for a long time but never knew how to begin. After hearing the three-block structure explained, she said she finally had what she needed to start. That is what the campaign is producing across the community: people moving from sitting on their story to actively telling it.

Two stories from the campaign show the framework in action
Beatrice Akwanamnye spent 35 years building a career in multimedia before she resigned. Many people around her saw that as the end of a successful run, but Beatrice found herself with more time than she knew what to do with and no clear plan for what came after.
In 2025, she came across ALX's tech programmes and, out of curiosity, enrolled in four courses. The experience challenged her to unlearn, learn, and relearn, building the grit and mindset she needed to do hard things in a field she had never worked in before. It reshaped how she saw growth, opportunity, and herself. Today she leads as CEO of Diaspora Digital Media, restructuring and positioning the organisation for growth across the online media and tech space. Her advice to anyone at a crossroads: "Your age is not a limitation. Your years of experience are your greatest advantage, and it is never too late to reinvent yourself."

Priscilla Aklog was a high school graduate trying to figure out what came next when a friend introduced her to ALX. She signed up to learn new skills and found herself pushed consistently outside her comfort zone, surrounded by learners who were building and showing up every single day. That environment changed something in her.
Step by step, she started saying yes to opportunities she would have previously turned down, finding her voice, building her confidence, and eventually becoming a community ambassador. She is still learning, still growing, and still choosing the harder path. What the programme gave her was more than a skill set. It changed how she saw herself, and that shift is the part of her story that carries the most weight. That is her after and it is more convincing than any credential because it shows who she is becoming, not just what she has done.
Both stories follow the same arc: a before that explains the starting point honestly, a during that shows what the journey actually demanded, and an after that makes clear what became possible. That structure is what makes a story credible enough for someone to act on.
